COMMENTARTISTS COME TO THE U.S. FOR TRIENNIAL in Manhattan, New York New Museum which exhibits new work by American and international artists. The New Museum has announced the names of thirty-four artists, artist groups, and temporary collectives—making for over fifty participants—for its second museum triennial, “The Ungovernables.” Curated by Eungie Joo, Keith Haring director and curator of education and public programs at the New Museum, the show takes its inspiration from the concept of “‘ungovernability’ and its transformation from a pejorative term used to describe unruly ‘natives’ to a strategy of civil disobedience and self-determination,” according to the museum in a press release. The museum adds that the triennial is intended to address “the urgencies of a generation who came of age after the independence and revolutionary movements of the 1960s and ’70s.” Many of the artists have never exhibited before in the United States, and, in conjunction with the show’s theme, were born between the mid-’70s and mid-’80s. . COMMENT MIAMI ART MUSEUM RENAMED AFTER BENEFACTOR After a $15 million gift from museum benefactor Jorge Pérez, the Miami Art Museum has announced it will be renamed the Jorge M. Pérez Art Museum of Miami-Dade County, reports Robin Pogrebin of the New York Times. Pérez’s gift follows a $5 million donation he previously made to the museum’s capital campaign for its new downtown building, which is expected to open in 2013. Pérez has pledged part of his Latin American art collection, valued at an estimated $15 million, to the museum as well.“It makes it possible to move forward with great confidence about the building,” said museum director Thomas Collins of Pérez’s donation, which brings the institution $167 million closer to its $220 million goal.Pogrebin reports that not all reacted so favorably: Museum trustee Mary Frank recently resigned over the prospective renaming. “It’s a sad day for Miami. The name of the museum should not be sold to any private individual. The museum belongs to Miami.” COMMENTCALL TO ARTISTS 2012 DANCE ART GALLERY.
